    Us at the uncertain moment
    when my soul slides around
like a yolk in your palm

    My soul keeper my garden
is split 50-50 down the middle
    With dark leaves and light
    it could go either way

           Speaker, are you ready?
    No, my mouth is dry
    and wilting—

I could curl into the couch and wait
or get up and do the watering myself.

“Pacific Plate”
Westwind Magazine
2018

A fence along the road separates us from cows
The carved bay separates us from everyone else
Somewhere outside of North America you point
Somewhere part of the Pacific, not anywhere
No man’s land, no woman either, no land at all
So good thing I am neither, I am just a thing
Dropped onto a bright green pasture, so I run
While the dirt grumbles and shakes hungry
A cow looks to cross the line onto our plate
We pause for it, it blinks at us, decides to stay
We drive along, I say, that fence is in our way
You don’t hear me, you belong to the quiet
Of belonging nowhere.
